The Dyson Airwrap's Coanda effect — the aerodynamic phenomenon where airflow attracts and wraps hair around the barrel automatically — sounds gimmicky until you use it. The key to getting loose, relaxed beach waves (not tight ringlets) comes down to one thing: how long you hold the barrel in place.

Prep: Products on Damp Hair

Airwrap works best on hair that's about 80% dry. Apply a light heat protectant and a small amount of Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil while hair is still damp. Rough dry with a regular dryer to about 80%, then switch to the Airwrap.

The Barrel and Direction

Use the 1.2-inch or 1.6-inch barrel for beachy waves — not the 0.8-inch, which creates tighter curls. Alternate the direction of each section — wrap some toward your face, some away. This alternating direction is the difference between "curly" and "wavy." Alternating, varied waves look like you've been at the beach.

Hold Time Controls Wave Tightness

After each section, press the cool shot button and hold the wave in your palm for 5 seconds before releasing. This is non-negotiable — the cool shot sets the wave so it lasts all day.

Don't brush your waves out after styling. If you want to separate and loosen them, run your fingers through gently. A brush will destroy the wave pattern and create frizz.
